Tarnished silverplate trinket box, crystal ring holder, and powder jar on a velvet dressing surface — Gilded Estate collection, Jolene Le Mille Archive

Gilded Estate

Tarnished silverplate, foxed mercury glass, and brass that has developed its own particular patina. The dressing table, the vanity, and the formal surface — powder jars, trinket boxes, crystal ring holders, candlesticks, and the small objects that dressed a room the way a woman dressed herself. Gilding and gesso from 1870 to 1920, kept to a standard.

About This Collection

These pieces were not acquired for their appearance. Ormolu and gilt bronze, hand-blown lead crystal, silverplate bearing the hallmarks of Sheffield and American assay houses. Several carry the particular tarnish that forms only over decades of careful use — not neglect, not display, but the slow accumulation of a life lived around them.

They came from the parlours and estate rooms of Metro Detroit's historic properties. The foxed glass still reflects. The brass clasp still holds. Nothing here was made to impress in the moment.
