A Gorham electroplate memo notepad holder, pattern YC53. The curved scrollwork bar at the top is a spring clip — slide a paper pad beneath it, and the spring holds the pages in place as you write and tear them off. The bar is embossed with scrollwork flanking a central cartouche. The leather backing is original, aged to ivory, carrying the stains and marks of a working desk. A small geometric sketch in pencil remains on the surface — the last thing someone drew before this piece left that writing desk in Oakland County.
