The lid is the surprise. From the front, it reads as a display piece — a miniature touring car mounted on a stepped walnut plinth, the kind of thing that lives on a desk and gets picked up by visitors. The car is cast in fine detail: black coachwork, a gray folding top, brass-finished trim at the radiator and running boards, spoke wheels with individual rim detail. The vehicle it references is Edwardian — the vertical radiator, the open touring body, the proportions of the hood — somewhere in the 1905 to 1915 window of early motoring.

Lift the lid and the plinth opens on two brass hinges. Inside: a two-compartment interior lined in tan felt, sized for cufflinks, a watch, folded notes, or whatever a man considered worth keeping close. The walnut is dark and lacquered, the molding profile stepped at the base.

The car and the box are one object. Neither makes full sense without the other.

Hunter’s Notes

I picked it up because of the car. The detail on it — the spoke wheels, the brass trim, that little folding top — it just looked right. And then I turned it over, or lifted it, and the whole base opened. Felt-lined, two compartments, brass hinges. Someone kept something in here. I don’t know what. Found at the Rochester Salvation Army, August 2025. $10 at the register.
